For many people, 13-year-old Jude’s quiet seaside town in Syria would be the perfect place to get away to for some peace and quiet. But when violence erupts and people start to talk of war, Jude’s pregnant mother decides it’s best for the two of them to stay with her uncle in America. Finding herself suddenly in a whole new culture and worrying about those she left behind, Jude struggles to adjust to her surroundings and find her new place in the world. Along the way, she faces hate and prejudice for being Islamic and also makes many friends among the other immigrant students in her school.
Told through first-person verse, ‘Other Words for Home’ carefully explores the complexity of its many themes, such as war, family, and belonging. Jude’s voice is realistic and accessible, allowing any young readers to easily step into her shoes and relate to her struggles.
